Before reading the story discuss the parts of the book (cover, back cover, spine, title, author, illustrator). Have the students look at the front cover, describing what’s on the cover and predicting what they think the story is about. Then, read the story asking questions about “what do they think will happen next?”, as you read.

Enjoy this fun, subtracting, gingerbread man song! Have the students show with their fingers how many gingerbread men are left and remind them that they are taking away or subtracting.

The students will now enjoy a different version of the Gingerbread Man. After the video have the students compare/contract, or tell how the stories for the same or different, from each other.
